So who is this old guy?
My life, my passion, my quest
has always been to be informed, to speak the truth, and to teach in
ways that make it easy for people to understand the method rather than
the madness.
My name is John Philion. And my life has been quite a roller coaster
over the years. First, as a young 1st Lieutenant, helicopter pilot and
training officer in the Marine Corps. Back then fitness was
pretty straight forward. You performed so many sit-ups, so many
pull-ups and ran a lot usually for 3 miles or more.
I remember being able to do 30 consecutive pull-ups in a minute, a 120
situps in less than 2 minutes and running 3 miles in under 20 minutes.
Not great, but not bad for a short (5'5") 145 lb guy.
You see back then the Olympics were the centerpiece of
athletic prowess. You would watch in amazement as young
athletes broke world records each year, some overcoming unbelievable
obstacles to their training.
Then it seems the world transitioned to a more complicated fitness
place. Fast foods, corporate gyms, fancy equipment (back then
a universal gym was considered high tech) and high paid athletes have
now become the norm. Companies emerged that might as well
have been selling snake oil that offered all sorts of supplements and
magical equipment. But the population has gobbled it up and a
new and growing supplements industry is now the rule rather than the
exception.
I was a part of that transition. I joined the gyms, took some
of the supplements and became an out of shape and overweight
non-athlete. I began to wonder why was I able at 145 lbs in
college to do repetitive bench presses of 315 lbs and military presses
over 225 lbs? I didn't take creatine, steroids, or any kind
of supplements then. I partied a lot at the fraternity and ate my share
of beer, pizza and ice cream. My genetics weren't that great
and my stamina was average.
After much thought the answer sprang to me. When I was maybe
12 years old I started learning about gymnastics moves.
Handstands, ring work, parallel bars, ring iron crosses, and
even rope climbs were my experimental exercises. I used to
walk around the front yard on my hands to see how far and long I could
go. I was terrible as a gymnast, but I did increase my
muscular strength and stamina through functional performance.
I ended up playing water polo with short arms and not speed,
but I enjoyed the water sports.
But those haphazard exercises helped me develop incredible strength for
my size and weight. I now wish I had kep it up. You
see then I was constantly applying overloads and progression by making
the exercises more difficult. Two arm handstands became one arm
handstands. Push-ups became plyometric with hand claps and flips.
These reflections later in life have given me the passion to learn as
much as I can about fitness training and the specifice scientific
techniques that have been devloped for strength, hypertrophy, power,
and core training.
So why use me. Just go to any gym and look around. 95% of the
people there do not have training logs. 95% of the people there do not
do squats, deadlifts, or lunges. You will mostly see men
working their arms and chests, period. The women will be
using 3 lb dumbbells doing curls, lunges and various aerobics moves.
Hardly anybody knows what to do or why to do it!! I won't kid you.
Results don't come easy. But when you set the
proper goals and make better performance the goal and better workout
ethics the rule results will come and good habits will form.
